This Is What Happens When I Ask For a Raised Garden Bed

One of my very favorite things about my husband is his ability to build things.  He doesn’t just build them, he takes my little ideas and makes them into something truly great, both in genius and proportion.

This particular project was his answer to my plea for a raised garden bed in our backyard vegetable garden.  It’s absolutely fantastic.

He lets the kids help out as he’s building, teaching them the little tips and tricks that his father taught him once upon a time.  Some lucky wife is going to be thanking him for that someday (the same way I appreciate his father).

We’ve started out with peppers on top and lettuce in the bottom, and it’s been perfect.  The beds run north to south so the lettuce is shaded by the overhead planting box for a very short period of time each day.  We could very easily plant more sun-loving vegetables in the lower bed as well.

The cross rails on top were left from the previous use of the structure which was for upside-down planters.  The hooks are still in place so we can add hanging baskets if desired.

The Details

We built this raised garden bed project with redwood for durability and beauty.  It really is a focal point in the yard now, the structure is just so beautiful.

He used 4×6″x8′ boards for the boxes and 4×4″ posts for the vertical supports and horizontal support rails.  He also added a dripper system to both levels that works on a timer to make sure the planter beds stay appropriately hydrated.

Oh, and I don’t have to weed it.  I’m pretty sure that’s what love looks like.
